Christina Papakyriakou’s series of portraits pays tribute to the women who gave birth in this very clinic over the years. She embarked on a journey to trace these women, seeking to connect with their stories and experiences. From this process, she created nine portraits, each depicting a woman who had once given birth in this space.

Engaging in personal conversations, Papakyriakou aimed to capture their energy, learn about their lives, and understand their unique experiences of childbirth. From these interactions, she created realistic portraits set against surreal backgrounds, shaped by the emotions and stories shared during their meetings. To ensure authenticity, Petros Kameris photographed the women and Papakyriakou painted from these images, preserving both their physical likeness and the essence of their presence.

While childbirth is a universally shared experience, the artist emphasizes that each woman experiences it uniquely. That singular moment of bringing a child into the world alters one’s perception of time—what once felt familiar is irrevocably transformed. Life as a mother is no longer the same, and time itself takes on a new meaning.

These works are deeply connected to the space in which they are exhibited—the very room that once served as a surgery and delivery room when the building operated as a gynecological clinic. The idea for the project emerged naturally from the space itself, creating a bridge between past and present, personal memory and collective experience. The titles of the works correspond to the dates on which the women gave birth, capturing the exact moment when their lives changed forever.

Η σειρά πορτρέτων της Χριστίνας Παπακυριακού αποτελεί ένα αφιέρωμα στις γυναίκες που γέννησαν σε αυτή την κλινική μέσα στα χρόνια. Ξεκίνησε ένα ταξίδι για να εντοπίσει αυτές τις γυναίκες, επιδιώκοντας να συνδεθεί με τις ιστορίες και τις εμπειρίες τους. Από αυτή τη διαδικασία, δημιούργησε εννέα πορτρέτα, που το καθένα απεικονίζει μια γυναίκα που κάποτε είχε γεννήσει σε αυτόν τον χώρο.

Συμμετέχοντας σε προσωπικές συζητήσεις, η Παπακυριακού είχε στόχο να αιχμαλωτίσει την ενέργειά τους, να μάθει για τη ζωή τους και να κατανοήσει τις μοναδικές εμπειρίες τους από τον τοκετό. Από αυτές τις αλληλεπιδράσεις, δημιούργησε ρεαλιστικά πορτρέτα σε σουρεαλιστικά υπόβαθρα, διαμορφωμένα από τα συναισθήματα και τις ιστορίες που μοιράζονταν κατά τη διάρκεια των συναντήσεών τους. Για να εξασφαλίσει την αυθεντικότητα, o φωτογράφος Πέτρος Καμέρης φωτογράφισε τις γυναίκες και η Παπακυριακού χρησιμοποίησε αυτές τις εικόνες ως αναφορά, διατηρώντας τόσο τη φυσική τους ομοιότητα όσο και την ουσία της παρουσίας τους.

Ενώ ο τοκετός είναι μια παγκόσμια κοινή εμπειρία, ηκαλλιτέχνις τονίζει ότι κάθε γυναίκα τον βιώνει μοναδικά. Αυτή η μοναδική στιγμή του να φέρεις ένα παιδί στον κόσμο αλλάζει την αντίληψη του χρόνου - αυτό που κάποτε ένιωθε οικείο μεταμορφώνεται αμετάκλητα. Η ζωή ως μητέρα δεν είναι πια η ίδια και ο ίδιος ο χρόνος αποκτά νέο νόημα.

Τα έργα αυτά συνδέονται άρρηκτα με τον χώρο στον οποίο εκτίθενται—το ίδιο δωμάτιο που κάποτε λειτουργούσε ως αίθουσα χειρουργείου και τοκετού, όταν το κτήριο ήταν γυναικολογική κλινική. Η ιδέα για το πρότζεκτ γεννήθηκε φυσικά μέσα από τον ίδιο τον χώρο, δημιουργώντας μια γέφυρα μεταξύ παρελθόντος και παρόντος, προσωπικής μνήμης και συλλογικής εμπειρίας. Οι τίτλοι των έργων αντιστοιχούν στις ημερομηνίες που οι γυναίκες έφεραν στον κόσμο τα παιδιά τους.
